"To break a palm-knell nut for a fowl."

Meaning of Proverb & Background

Imagine a little bird, small and delicate, perched on a tree branch. Sometimes, this little bird looks down and sees something shiny, like a colorful stone, in a deep, unreachable hole in the ground. It becomes sad and starts chirping sadly, wanting that shiny thing so much, but it can’t reach it.

Now, this is a bit like when we want something so badly that it makes us sad, even though we can’t have it. Just like that little bird, sometimes we might cry or feel unhappy because we can’t get what we want, even if it’s something we can’t change or have no control over.

So, this proverb reminds us not to grieve or be sad for things that are beyond our reach or impossible to change. Instead, it’s better to focus on the things we can do and the happiness that’s within our grasp.
